আজি ঝড়ের রাতে তোমার অভিসার/Aji Jhorer Raatey Tomar Abhishar/On this storm swept night you set out on a tryst

Aji jhorer raatey tomar abhishar

Poran shokha bondhu he amaar||

Akash kaNde hotash  shomo, nai je ghum noyone momo-

Duar khuli he priyotamo, chai je baare baar||

Bahire kichu dekhitey nahi pai,

Tomar potho kothay bhabi tai|

Shudur kon nodir paare gohono kon boner dhaare

Gobhir kon andhokaare hotecho tumi paar||

On this storm swept night

On this storm swept night you set out on a tryst

Oh companion of my soul, my cherished one||

Under a forlorn waiting sky, I keep my vigil

To open the door my Dearest, in the hope of your arrival ||

All else is shrouded in the cloak of unlight

As I wonder which new path you will take

By the banks of some faraway river through the deep of an unseen forest

What is this dense mantle of darkness that conceals your way? ||

  1. Hi, this is my interpretation of the translation. Excuse me for any shortcomings:

Friend you chose this strange stormy night
To visit my heart which awaits your sight
You left me sleepless while the sky laments for forgiveness
My eyes keep searching through open doors for your footsteps
Only nothingness is what meets my blurred eye
When your ways leaves me wondering why
Beside which river next to which dense woods
Across darkness that only you can make your own

  2. Well translated. I tried to translate it thus.

My dearest friend, for your tryst
You have chosen this stormy night
    The sky is hopelessly crying
I have no sleep in my eyes
    Opening my door
Again and again I am looking out
    I see nothing
My mind is full of worries
    Where runs your way
Is it along the bank of the river
Or along the verge of the deep dark forest?
    And in this darkness
Where are you crossing the stream?

Transcreation of one of the sweetest love songs – Aji jhorer rate tomar abhisar – by Rabindranath Tagore. Sung like a plain song its best recording is by Debabrata Biswas.
