The Day when the Storm broke
On this unusual day of Ashwin
On this cloudy day filled with unease
The wind has begun to play with the fields of autumnal hay
How will you know which path to take?
On this cloud-filled day so full of unease!
Do you not see, my brave one,
Flickers of lightning setting the sky aflame!
Just think for once if this storm will take care
With the flowers that entwine your hair.
Think about it, my brave one!
During a storm such as this
Who binds anklets about their feet?
If the unruly rain today should spirit your veil away
How will you walk the village path, unashamed
During a storm such as threatens this day?
Listen to me, anxious though you are,
Will any doors be open for you today?
At the end of this winding road where field greets sky
Do you suppose someone still sits in wait?
During such a storm, listen to what I have to say.
If a lamp was lit at doorstep today
Would it not go out again and again?
If a flute did call out would its song not be drowned
In the endless dark of this Ashwin night
By wind and by rain, again and again?
If the clouds should rumble in rage
And make your feet miss their step in dance,
Who will you rage against, indeed, who will you blame
If your heart should fill with fear –
When the clouds rumble in rage.
And if you did have to go, why did you not remember,
To call on me for company?
Did you not know I would wait at my door, by the path you would take
Idling my lonely hours away –
Why did you never call on me?
The hours have long passed,
I had nothing much to do today.
No one thought to see how I was, all day in my lonely house,
As the trees wept and moaned about me.
I had not a thing to do that could not wait.
No matter how loud the storm,
No matter how darkened the skies with cloud,
And how endless your path through the eternal night
I would not have been afraid –
No matter how loud grew the storm.
As lightning flickered –
This heart of mine would have danced to the beat,
These robes of mine would have fluttered as a pair of eager wings –
And sky finally unite with earth,
By the flicker of lightning come alive.
Together, you and I on the same path
That journey would be indeed fraught
Your anklets today would have raised a storm all their own,
As lightning flashed from your eyes –
With passion our journey would have been fraught.
Why do you walk alone my love?
Why have you bound bells at your feet?
Why did you recall on such a storm filled night?
Tales of a forgotten spring long gone?
Where do you go alone, my love?
