Mahendra kept thinking, ‘I said ‘It is a lie, I do not love Binodini.’ I have said this very harshly. I may not love her, but to declare that I do not love her is cruel indeed. There is hardly a woman who would not be hurt by that. When will I have a chance to refute this? I cannot say that I love her; but I need to tell her about not loving her in a gentler manner. It would be wrong to let her harbor such cruel but false notions about me.’
He then took the three letters out of his case and read them. He said to himself, ‘There is no doubt that Binodini loves me. But then why did she rush to Bihari yesterday in that manner? That was only to fool me. When I said clearly that I did not love her, there was little she could do but withdraw her feelings for me. Perhaps she will begin loving Bihari after being insulted by me.
Mahendra became so agitated that he was astonished and slightly worried by the strength of his own feelings. There was after all little harm in Binodini overhearing that he did not love her or in her attempting to curb her feelings for him after what she had heard him say. Just as an anchor feels the pull of the chain most strongly during a storm, Mahendra too felt drawn to Asha with more than usual intensity.
That night he held her face close to his own and asked, ‘Chuni, tell me how much you truly love me.’
Asha wondered, ‘What kind of question is this! Am I under a cloud of suspicion because of the shameful talk about Bihari and me?’ She almost died of shame and protested, saying, ‘Fie, how can you ask me such a question? I beg you to tell me – when did you see a lack of love on my part?’
He wished to extract her love by crushing her heart and said, ‘Why do you want to go to Kashi then?’
Asha answered, ‘I do not want to go to Kashi, I won’t go anywhere.’
Mahendra: But you did want to go previously.
Asha answered, greatly anguished, ‘You know why I did.’
Mahendra: You would have been happier perhaps with your aunt.
Asha answered, ‘Never! I did not want to go for the sake of happiness.’
Mahendra answered, ‘I am telling you honestly Chuni, you could have been much happier if you had married someone else.’
Asha moved away from Mahendra’s embrace, hid her face in her pillow and froze – then her tears could not be held back. Mahendra tried to pull her back to himself, but she would not let go of her pillow. Mahendra was both pleased and mortified at her indignation, seeing it as a sign of her commitment to her husband.
Thoughts that had been suppressed so far were now out in the open and causing turmoil in everyone’s minds. Binodini kept thinking, ‘Why did Bihari not protest such a clearly stated accusation?’ If he had protested, Binodini would have been pleased even if she knew that to be false. She felt that it was only fitting that Mahendra had hurt Bihari. Why should such a good man love Asha? She was happy to see that Bihari had been pushed away by this blow.
But she could not help thinking of his stricken, bloodless, pale face. The compassionate feminine heart that beat within her wept for him. She held onto that mortified image within her heart, much as a mother nurses a sick child and an intense eagerness grew in her heart to be the one to repair his hurt and see his face once again as it used to be, alive, suffused with life and brimming with laughter.
A few days passed in such thought before she could bear it no longer and wrote a note to console him,
‘Brother-in-law, since seeing your mortified face that day, I have been praying with all my heart that you are feeling better, that you become as you were before – when we will see you smile as easily as before and speak as openly as you did. Please write a few lines to me and tell me how you are.
Yours,
Binod, your sister-in-law’
She sent a doorman with the letter to Bihari’s house.
Bihari had not imagined even in his dreams that Mahendra would declare so rudely and vehemently that Bihari loved Asha. The reason was that he had never allowed the thought to enter his own mind. He was dumbstruck at first – then anger and shame tormented him and he protested it, saying, ‘Wrong, unjust, baseless!’
But now that the word had been spoken, it could no longer be silenced. The seeds of truth in it began to grow. He kept recalling how he had once looked up to see a shy girl’s beautiful face during sunset in a flower scented garden and had thought of her as his own; this was the thought that swirled through his mind and rose as a great pain that took him by the throat.
After spending the long night up on the terrace, he walked about on the street in front of his house. He became aware of something that he had not realised before; his emotions rose and what had previously been hidden now came to life as he thought of what Mahendra had said.
He then understood where he had done wrong and said to himself, ‘I do not have the right to be angry any more, I must beg forgiveness from Mahendra and leave. I must admit to him that I did him wrong by leaving him that day as I had judged him to be in the wrong.’
Bihari knew that Asha had gone to Kashi. One night he came to the house, slowly coming to Mahendra’s door. There he saw a distant uncle of Rajlakshmi’s called Sadhucharan, and asked him, ‘Sadhuda, I have not been able to come here for a few days, how are things?’ Sadhucharan told him that they were all well. Bihari then asked, ‘When did the daughter-in-law go to Kashi?’Sadhucharan answered, ‘She did not go. She will not be going.’ Bihari felt like going inside the house as soon as he heard this. His heart felt this all the more because he knew that it would be wrong, even impossible for him to do what he had once done; climb up the stairs like a member of the family and talk to all the family members in tones of happiness.
He wanted so much, for the last time possibly, to go in and talk to Rajlakshmi as her own son, to address the veiled Asha as his sister-in-law for one last time and say a few things to her. Sadhucharan said, ‘Why are you standing here in the dark, let us go in.’
Bihari took a few quick steps towards the inner house and then came back and said to Sadhu, ‘I need to go, I have something to do.’He left soon; that same night he went on a trip to the west.
The doorman came back with the letter as he did not find Bihari at home. Mahendra was walking in the small garden at the front of the house. He asked, ‘Whose letter is that?’ The man told him everything upon which Mahendra took the letter from him.
At one point he did think of giving the letter to Binodini just to see the shamed look on her face, and not say a thing. He had no doubt that the letter would hold information that would shame her. He remembered how she had sent another letter to Bihari once before. He could not control his curiosity about what had written in the letter. He convinced himself that she was in his care and that he was responsible for her well-being. Thus it was his responsibility to open all such suspicious letters. He could not let Binodini step off the path of righteousness.
Mahendra opened the letter and read the few lines. They were written in simple words and the sincerity of emotion was clearly expressed. He read it again and again, but even after that, he could not decide which way Binodini’s heart was inclining. He was fearful of what might happen, thinking, ‘She is turning from me to another because I insulted her by declaring I did not love her. She has forsaken all hope of me in her anger.’
When Mahendra thought of this, it became impossible for him to remain patient. He could not bear the thought that the woman who had come close to him should now be lost through the stupidity of a moment. He thought, ‘If Binodini has loved me, it is for her own good as it will keep her in one place. I know my own mind and I will never wrong her. She can love me without fear for I love Asha and she has no need to fear me. But if she begins to love another, then who can tell what harm she may come to.’ Mahendra decided that he would not yield himself but would try and draw Binodini’s heart back towards himself by any means.
Mahendra entered the inner house to see Binodini waiting there, as if in expectation of someone. His mind immediately filled with hatred. He said, ‘You wait in vain, he is not coming. Here is the letter you sent,’ and he threw the letter down.
Binodini asked, ‘But it seems to have been opened?’
Mahendra left without answering her. When she thought that Bihari might have read the letter and returned it without bothering with a reply, her veins seemed to throb in anger. She sent for the doorman who had taken her letter to Bihari but he was busy elsewhere. In the darkened bedroom where she had confined herself, her eyes seemed burn with the pain within her heart, the tears like heated oil dripping from a lamp. It was not enough to merely tear her own letter into a hundred pieces, she now wondered why it was not possible to completely erase the few lines of ink from both her past and her present and send them to oblivion.
Like an angry bee seeking to sting the first thing it sees, Binodini’s hurt made her want to harm the household that surrounded her. Why should there be such resistance to every one of her wishes? Why should she not succeed at anything at all? If she was to be denied happiness, then she would make it the purpose of her fruitless life to crush the lives of those who had been the obstacles to her happiness, standing in the path to her success and had kept her from enjoying all the riches she might have had otherwise.
