That we will direct our respect towards the place where we derive our learning from is in the nature of mankind. Everyone will agree that if the opposite is seen the aberration must be rectified through external discipline.
But prior to deciding on the method of correction thought must be given to the reasons behind this change.
I see that many people are stating regretfully that such incidents are especially ruinous in a country like India where the relationship between guru and shishya borders on the religious. Merely calling them ruinous is not enough, one must look for the truth behind a change to behaviour that is contrary despite the tradition being embedded in our heritage.
I do not agree with the view that the psychology of the students of Bengal is the result of a whim on the part of nature. Young people study in college during a transitional part of their lives. They are taking their first steps from a framework of rules into an arena of freedom. This freedom is not merely limited to external behaviour, it is also the time when they spread their wings internally and leave the cage of words to test the skies of thought. Their minds have achieved the right to question, to debate, and to judge for the first time. This transitional phase of both bodies and minds is filled with pain. It is a time when the smallest slight pierces the soul and the slightest indication of affection fills life with joy. The effects of socializing with other people has the most effect during these times and never to this extent ever again.
This is the age which is the most suitable for molding a life under the influence of the others, every nation agrees with this truth about human nature. That is why it is said in our country: When the son attains the age of sixteen years, one must treat him like a friend. This means that sons of this age begin to see their fathers as human beings and not as vehicles of discipline; because one can grow best in the company of others at this age. That is why students in the universities across the world are given positions that accord them respect and allow them to approach professors and gain the benefit of social interactions. The students finish the preparatory stages of their education and are now about to make the essence of humanity their own; a task that cannot be achieved without freedom and self respect. This is why self respect is greatly treasured at this age. Just as teeth emerge with a little accompanying pain when the time is right for chewing one’s food, self respect too arrives with some excessive feelings when the age is appropriate for achieving adulthood.
Sometimes students get into strife at this age of transition. In those situations where the relationship between teachers and students are normal, these troubles wash away easily like flotsam before the tide; it is in fact unpleasant only when one attempts to pick at it with an eye at removal.
As per the laws of nature this age of transition arrives in the lives of Bengali students too; a point when their inclination is to go where their strength takes them and they feel strongly about committing themselves to greatness when they are rewarded with respect, knowledge and their souls receive inspiration.
When a prisoner breaks rules no one feels unable to discipline them severely; this is because they are seen only as offenders and not as people. The harshness of the punishment merely serves to harden him further and makes him subhuman but no one considers this; because no one considers the effects as affecting a human being. That is why the jails are supervised by people who do not see the human but consider his offence to be the true identity of the prisoner.
The person in charge of building an army is forced to consider people with one specific need in mind. His orders are to create an efficient war machine. Hence he sees only the faults that lie in the way of achieving this and having seen them proceeds to correct them with brutality.
But we must not think of students as prisoners or soldiers. We know that they must be molded into human beings. Human nature is delicate and constructed of intricately woven living strands. This is the very reason why a headache may not be cured by smashing the head in with a club; many things have to be considered before working with nature in order to heal it.
This then is the nature of treatment at the hands of the inexperienced. The experts never see the disease as a separate thing but consider the nature of the whole human being; they accept the complexities of human nature and do not do away with the entire human being in the name of attacking one particular disease.
Hence the person who was meant to be a jailor or a drill sergeant or an exorcist should never take up the job of instructing students in becoming humans. The only people fit to take responsibility for students should be those who can easily respect individuals who are younger than them, who know less than them and those who hold less power than them; those who have learned that forgiveness is an ornament to the strong; who are not afraid of accepting their students as their friends.
Let those who wish to bind students within bonds of strict rules also think about the great harm they do to the teachers. There are very few people on earth who can progress along the path of truth inspired by the great ideals within themselves. They are alerted to their responsibilities by the to-ing and fro-ing they undergo in their interactions with the outside. They never forget themselves because they are in complete understanding with their environment.
This is why masters are in danger wherever slaves exist, the high castes are fallen wherever the lower castes are suppressed. If students move from the rightful path as human beings under strict control, if they bear every kind of insult, ill treatment and injustice in silence and without protest, then most teachers will also be pulled down by this. They will see to their own downfall if they allow their students to become subjugated and subjects of derision. No one can carry out their own responsibilities in the face of derision.
The opposition will say, does that mean we must put up with everything that the young will do? To them I say, the young will never do whatever they please. They will walk along the right paths if they are treated properly. If you insult them, curse their race, religion or customs, if they see that there is little chance of getting fair treatment, if they see that their own teachers are forced to bow to others despite their own worth, then they will express their discontent at each moment; if they do not then we must think of it as a matter of shame and sadness.
