Binodini wondered, ‘What is going on? Sulking in anger? Or in fear perhaps; you wish to show me that you do not care? You want to stay in lodgings? Let us see how long you can do this?’
But she felt uncertain as well about his absence.
She had sported daily with Mahendra, with ties that bound his soul and words that struck at his heart but now that he was gone, time seemed to hang heavy on her hands. The house lost all its charm for her. Without Mahendra, Asha was utterly unnecessary to Binodini. Her soul, starved as it was of love was continually agitated by Mahendra’s courting of Asha – the pain that awakened her hungry imagination also intensely inflamed her desire. The man who had destroyed her life and withheld fulfillment from her, who had ignored a woman like her in favour of an ignorant, needy waif like Asha – Binodini was not sure whether she loved this man, Mahendra, or hated him, whether she would give him her heart or take vicious revenge on him. Mahendra had lit a flame in her heart but Binodini could not tell whether it was of love or of hatred, or one fuelled by both emotions. She smiled bitterly and said to herself, ‘Has any woman ever been in this state? I do not even know whether I wish to die in his arms or kill him with these two hands of mine!’ But one thing was certain; she needed Mahendra, whether to singe him with her fires or to go up in flames with him. Where would she spill her poisoned arrows now that he was gone? Her breath fell rapidly as she thought, ‘Where will he go! He will have to come back here. He is mine!’
Asha wandered about Mahendra’s living room on the pretence of cleaning up, touching his chair with its wood stained with hair oil where his head had rested, his desk with its scattered papers, his books, his photographs and other things while dusting them with her own clothing. She spent her first evening without him acquainting herself with his possessions by picking one up and then another. Binodini came and stood by her; Asha stopped what she was doing and pretended instead to be looking for something. Binodini asked, a serious look on her face, ‘What is happening to you?’
Asha smiled a little with some effort and said, ‘Nothing, dear.’
Binodini hugged Asha and asked, ‘Why Bali, why did he go away like this?’
Asha heard the question and was immediately overcome with doubts and fear; she said, ‘You know, he has got some work at college.’
Binodini lifted Asha’s face with her right hand, looked at her in silence with an expression of overwhelming compassion and sighed.
Asha’s heart sank. She had known herself to be stupid and Binodini to be clever. Darkness seemed to swirl about her when she realised what the expression on Binodini’s face meant. She could not bring herself to ask Binodini what she was trying to say and sat down on a sofa near the wall. Binodini sat next to her and held her tightly in her arms. The loving embrace served only to make Asha start weeping as she became unable to hide her emotions any further. In the distance, a blind beggar sang on the street as he shook a pair of cymbals to the beat,
‘Give me your feet that I may be absolved, all forgiving mother’
Bihari came looking for Mahendra but found Asha weeping and Binodini sitting by her side with her arms about Asha, gently drying her tears. He quickly moved back. He went to the empty room next door and sat there clutching his head in his palms, thinking about why Asha would be crying. Who would be stony hearted enough to make a soul like her unhappy, she who was naturally unable to harm anyone? He also thought of how Binodini was comforting Asha and said to himself, ‘I have been so wrong about Binodini. She is as benevolent as a goddess where care, consolation and selfless love for her friend are concerned.’
Bihari sat in the darkness for a long time. Once the blind mendicant had finished his song, Bihari made his way towards Mahendra’s room, clearing his throat and stamping his feet in warning. Just as he got to the door, Asha ran out with her face veiled from him on her way to the inner house.
Binodini said as soon as he entered, ‘What is this? Are you sick?’
Bihari: ‘Nothing.’
Binodini: ‘Why are your eyes so red?’
Bihari did not answer her and said instead, ‘Where did Mahendra go to?’
Binodini answered sombrely, ‘I hear he has been staying in lodgings near the college as he has work to do in the hospital. Do move aside, I have to go.’
Bihari had been unconscious of standing in the doorway blocking Binodini’s path. He quickly moved aside. He also suddenly remembered that it was not seemly to talk to Binodini while they were by themselves in one of the outer rooms in the twilit evening. As she left, Bihari quickly said to her, ‘Madam, please look after Asha. She is very innocent, she does not know how to inflict pain on anyone or avoid being mistreated by others.’
Bihari could not see Binodini’s face in the darkness, if he could he would have seen cruel jealousy flicker across it like forked lightning. She had known straight away from seeing Bihari today that his heart was filled with compassion for Asha. Binodini counted for nothing there! Her very existence was to see to it that Asha was protected, that Asha was unharmed and that Asha had every chance at happiness! Mahendra would have to go and marry Asha, so that Binodini could end up with the boorish bridegroom of Barasat! Bihari would not be able to bear innocent Asha’s tears and so Binodini again must be ready at all times to wipe away Asha’s tears.
She wanted just once to see that Mahendra and Bihari become like the very shadows that she cast upon the ground, so that they might know what she was and how little Asha was in comparison to her! How different the two women indeed were! Thwarted by her own fate from becoming the sole captor of a man’s heart, Binodini resolved instead to become a figure of retribution.
To Bihari, Binodini said very gently before she left, ‘You need not worry, sir. There is no need to feel anxious fretting over my Chokher Bali.’
