গেয়েছে মর্মরচ্ছন্দে অশোকের কচি রাঙা পাতা;
বেজেছে বর্ষণঘন শ্রাবণের বিনিদ্র নিশীথে;
রহস্যের তীব্রতায় দেহে মনে জাগাল হরষ;
উত্তরে সে হেনেছিল চকিত বিদ্যুৎ;

My grandmother always read the rhymes fast –
Of them I remember a few lines – “The bride comes riding a litter
By the shadowed path under the trees,
Pearls at throat, golden bells encircling her feet.”
In my boyish heart
Of the sacred feminine that first whispered alert
In half awakened imagination it raised waves of rhythm,
In that twilit hour that beguiles the mind with light and shade,
Blurring the edges between truth and tales
She comes to me, a being formed of shadows.
The path that the litter of rhymes had taken
Marks its way through my heart
Along the rise and fall of my pulse unseen.
From its very furthest ends
An unheard flute plays a song filled with hope uncertain
Touching the furthest reaches of thought.
That day in my dreams, the feet that bore her
Made the blood in my breast stir,
I feel them come close without getting near,
Their journey continues, never ending, never here.
Those days passed. The tales of a bride
Singing in the murmur of the young red leaves of the Ashoke tree
Ringing in the sleepless nights of rain dense Shravan;
In a melancholic mid afternoon tune
In the tired footsteps of a traveller abroad.
In the tinkle of anklets that enchanting presence
Has raised my hopes in the land of sleep
In the tinkle encircling her feet.
I woke, no longer asleep,
In the blood red tinge of the skies in the east
She appears for a moment fleet
The painted trace of her steps unseen.
In my ear she whispered
An unknown voice, a name so sweet –
Suddenly
I turn to see and yet there is no one there.
Whose touch, suddenly one day
Raises a thrill, joy amid the deepening of mystery;
I had to ask entranced though I felt,
Are you she:
From which darkness do you
Emerge into glorious light!”
In answer she flashed, quick lightning in her eyes;
Wordless her reply, “I am but a messenger,
From the one who exists beyond the present,
She is forever searching for thee.
In the movement of the stars her name
Is entwined with yours
In a time long lost in shadows she began her journey,
Wandering since, she has forgotten her way
Her path lit by the ebb and flow of celestial light,
Pearls at throat, golden bells encircling her feet.”
