When a man is suffering from a grave illness, the struggle between death and their life force becomes most important. When a human life is in danger, the fact that he is a living organism is the one that comes to the fore. Yet to say that we are merely animals like other living entities is to leave our identity as humans incomplete. We are born with something much bigger than the life force that takes us from the shores of birth to those of death. This allows us to accept death and rise to eternal heights. For animals death is the final ending but for humans death is not the last word. We often forget this while we are alive. This makes us express our distress and helplessness over various aspects of living, such as fear, greed and grief. In those moments of forgetting ourselves, the demands placed by life grow strong; the expression of the self becomes dull. The person who makes their unwavering belief in the existence of a spiritual world beyond this mortal life clear, through the way they lead their lives, is the one to lead us in our pilgrimage towards salvation.
As I sit beside my beloved young friend Sukumar Ray’s sick bed, this thought has come to me again and again. I have seen death many times, but I have hardly ever seen anyone give up the ultimate sacrifice with such devotion to the Supreme Being, as this young man, as he faces death at the close of his short life. He has sung the song of endless life as he stands at death’s door. My soul is fulfilled with that song as I sit by his bed.
When the body that is the vehicle of our lives is disabled for a long time, when the various functions of the body are hampered resulting in pain and weakness, the majority of people cannot show their respect for the soul, they are assailed by a sense of doubt. But the ones who know the truth about life understand that old age, death, illness, loss, insult are all an essential part of life, but the victory of the soul is what is most important. That is why humans exist, not so that they can escape from sorrow or deprivation. The strength that allows us to undergo sacrifice, to scorn sorrow, loss and death, that very same strength proves that the truth of this mortal existence is not defined by happiness and sorrow.”
Rabindranath Tagore wrote this after the death of a young writer friend, Sukumar Ray. Ray was dying of Kalazaar. On this visit, he asked Rabindranath Tagore to sing two songs for him. One of these were,
(Achche Dukho, Achche Mrityu, Birohodohono Laage) There is sorrow, there is death, the pain of separation like a burning flame
