Mahendra had been physically and mentally exhausted the next morning after spending a sleepless night in tremendous emotional upheaval. It was the middle of the month of Phalgun and the weather was growing warmer. On other days, Mahendra sat with his books at the table in the corner of his bedroom. Today he leaned against a bolster on the floor and studied. The hours passed but he did not go for a bath. The street vendors hawked their wares on the street. Carriages passed incessantly on the road carrying people to work. The neighbour was building a new house, the women who worked as labourers began their monotonous song to the thuds of the terrace building. The warm southerly breeze made Mahendra’s troubled nerves relax; no terrible pledge, strenuous effort or deep thought seemed to suit the mood of the spring day.
‘Sir, what is wrong with you today? Will you not bather? The food is prepared. Why are you lying down? Are you ill? Do you have a headache?’ Binodini drew close to him and felt his forehead.
Mahendra mumbled, his eyes half closed, ‘I do not feel very well – I will not bathe today.’
Binodini said, ‘Even if you do not bathe, at least eat something.’ She remonstrated with Mahendra til he submitted to her anxious attentions and went to the dining room where he ate his lunch.
He returned to his room and lay down on the floor after his meal while Binodini gently pressed his temples. His eyes half closed, he said to her, ‘Bali, you have not eaten yet, go and eat now.’
Binodini could not be persuaded to leave. The curtains stirred in the hot breeze of that lazy afternoon and the meaningless rustlings of the trembling coconut leaves near the wall filled the room. Mahendra’s heart beat faster and faster and Binodini’s breath blew on the hair on his forehead. No one spoke a word. Mahendra thought, ‘I am floating on the eternal currents of this endless world, does it matter to anyone where my boat moors and for how long.’
As she sat by his head stroking his forehead, the desires of her eager unfulfilled youth made Binodini lean lower and lower till her hair touched Mahendra’s cheek. His body trembled at the gentle touch of that tendril of hair and he felt as though his breath was confined in his chest from whence it could not escape. He sat up suddenly and said, ‘No, I have classes, I have to go!’ He then stood up without looking at Binodini.
Binodini said, ‘Why the hurry, let me get your clothes,’ and she took his clothes out of the cupboard.
Mahendra went to classes quickly, but he could not concentrate there either. He tried in vain to focus on his studies but failing that, came home early.
When he came home, he found Binodini lying on the floor with a pillow under her chest reading a book – a cloud of black hair covering her back. Possibly she had not heard the sound of his shoes. Mahendra stepped carefully and drew close to her just in time to hear her sigh deeply.
Mahendra jested, ‘Oh paragon of mercy, do not waste your feelings for imaginary people. What are you reading?’
Startled, Binodini got up hurriedly and hid the book in her clothes. Mahendra tried to take it from her by force. After much struggling, he got hold of the book and read its title – ‘The Poison Tree’. Binodini panted with the exertions and turned her face from him in anger.
Mahendra’s heart was filled with emotions. He smiled with a great effort and said, ‘Shame! This is nothing! I thought it would be some great secret that I was wresting from you. ‘The Poison Tree’ after all that!’
Binodini answered, ‘What great secret could I possibly have?’
Mahendra burst out, ‘Suppose, it had been a letter from Bihari?’
Binodini’s eyes flashed angrily like lightning. Her gentle mood was gone in an instant and she stood up straight as a flame. Mahendra grabbed her hand and entreated, ‘Forgive me, forgive my jest!’
Binidini snatched her hand away forcefully, saying, ‘Who are you jesting about? If you were even worthy of his friendship, I could have borne your jests. But you have a narrow mind without the strength to sustain a friendship and yet you think you may jest!’
As she tried to leave, Mahendra circled her feet with his arms and prevented her from moving.
A shadow fell across them and he let go of her feet, looking up to see Bihari.
Bihari’s constant gaze chastised both as he said calmly, ‘I can see that I have come at the wrong time, but I will not stay for long. I came to say but one thing. I went to Kashi without knowing that your wife was there. I wronged her unknowingly but as there is no time to beg her forgiveness, I am here to beg yours. If I have ever allowed any impure thoughts to dwell within me with or without my knowledge, I implore you that she never be blamed for that.’
Mahendra was furious at being suddenly found out by Bihari. This was not his time to be generous.
He smiled a little and said, ‘The story about someone eating bananas in the temple seems to suit your situation. I have neither asked you to admit you are at fault or to deny it; then why are you trying to redeem yourself by begging to be pardoned?’
Bihari stood there for a while like a statue – then his lips trembled when he tried to speak. Binodini now spoke out, ‘Bihari, do not answer these words. Say nothing, Whatever this man is saying blackens him alone, it does not touch you at all.’
I doubt that Bihari heard a word of what Binodini said – for he began descending the stairs like a sleep walker.
Binodini followed him and said, ‘Bihari, do you have nothing to say to me? If you have harsh words, say them.’
Seeing that Bihari was not listening to her, Binodini held his right hand with both of hers to try and stop him. He shook her off with immense hatred and did not look back to see that she fell down when he pushed her away.
Mahendra heard the sound of her fall and came rushing to see that she was bleeding from a cut near her left elbow.
He ripped a piece from his own shirt and prepared to bind the cut saying, ‘This is a deep cut.’
Binodini quickly moved her arm away and said, ‘It is nothing, let it bleed.’
Mahendra said, ‘Let me give you a medicine after bandaging it, then it will not hurt so much and will heal quickly.’
Binodini moved away, ‘I do not want to get better, let this pain be mine.’
Mahendra persisted, ‘I have insulted you in front of others today, will you be able to forgive me?’
Binodini asked, ‘Why ask for forgiveness? You have done the right thing. Do I fear people? I heed no one. Are those who push me away and leave me, the ones I must care for, and the one who clings to my feet be of no consequence to me?’
Mahendra, maddened with feeling, said, ‘Binodini, so you will not spurn my love?’
Binodini answered, ‘I will worship your love. I have not had so much affection that I can afford to turn it away, saying ‘I do not want this.’
Mahendra held her hands in his and said, ‘Then come to my room. I have hurt you today and you too have hurt me – I cannot be happy until I have erased those memories.’
Binodini: Not today. Let me be today. If I have hurt you, forgive me.
Mahendra: You must forgive me too. Else I will not be able to sleep.
Binodini said, ‘I have forgiven you.’
Mahendra was eager to receive some immediate proof of Binodini’s forgiveness and love, But he could not say anything when he looked at her face. She went downstairs while he climbed up to the terrace where he walked about. He was feeling a sense of freedom at being discovered by Bihari. There is a kind of shame in secrecy and that seemed to have been greatly removed by his unveiling. He told himself, ‘I do not want to pretend to be good but it is no lie that I love someone else.’ He was so emboldened with his pride in being in love that he rejoiced in the knowledge of his own wrong doing. He threw a wordless challenge at the vast universe that lay above him with its stars and constellations and said, ‘No matter what evil people think I am capable of, I am in love.’ His thoughts of Binodini’s gradually drowned out the sky and the world and even his responsibilities. It was as if Bihari had come and tipped over the tightly sealed ink well of Mahendra’s life – the darkness of Binodini’s eyes and her hair seemed to obliterate all the clarity of his past existence and wipe out all that had happened earlier.
