১
THE MASTER’S GHOST
|
1
When the old master was on his deathbed everyone through the land said, ‘What will happen to us if you go?’
He felt sad too. He thought, ‘Who is going to keep the peace when I am gone?’
But death does not listen to these excuses. But God weakened somewhat and said, ‘I see no problem in letting him hang around as a ghost for a while. After all, they never die!’
2
His countrymen were all very relieved.
Every sort of problem arises when one believes in the future, but nothing can bother you if you believe in ghosts; they worry about everything on your behalf. But since they have no heads to speak of, they never suffer from headaches from worrying too much.
There were still those who tried to do their own worrying. They had their ears thoroughly boxed by the ghost. It is not easy to escape that grasp as one can neither outrun a ghost nor complain to anyone about what no one else can see.
The whole country walked about under the shadow of the ghost with their eyes shut to the world. The philosophers said, ‘This is the best way to live, with your eyes closed. One lets Fate take its course. This is how the blind organisms used to move around in the grasses and in the trees. That is why it is so easily adopted again.
This makes the spellbound people feel rather proud and happy about their ancient lineage.
The ghost’s prime minister was the jailer of his ghostly prison. As the walls of this prison were invisible the prisoners could never figure out how to escape.
The wheels continually turn in the mill inside the jail, but the only thing that is worn down is the strength in the people. When the strength is all gone, people calm down. This ensures that even though there may be no food, clothes or health in the ghostly kingdom, there is always lots of peace.
You will understand how much peace when I tell you that while in every other land people send for an exorcist when they are tormented by ghosts, here the exorcist is already under the ghost’s spell.
3
Things would have gone this way happily enough without people ever doubting the rule of the ghost. They would have been proud of the fact that their futures were destined to be as uneventful as a tethered pet goat’s, with neither bleat nor shake of horns.
But a problem still came about because one tiny, miniscule detail. See, no one had thought to think of the fact that all the other countries in the world were not in some ghostly grip. All the wheels of progress turned in those countries in the direction of the future and not to wear down the people’s will. There the people had not fallen under a spell; there they were all terribly alert.
4
In the kingdom of the ghost, all was quiet and people slept as soundly as babies, complacent that nothing would ever happen.
That is possibly good for babies, and possibly even for their mothers and definitely for the neighbours.
But something did happen. Invaders stormed the land.
It was bound to happen, or the stories that make up our history would be incomplete.
All the wise men were asked one by one, ‘Why did this happen?’
They shook their heads sagely and said, ‘This is no fault of the ghost, this is no fault of ours, it is all the invaders’ fault.’
This was extremely comforting to everyone else. They agreed gravely that it was good to be held blameless.
But even though it was not clear whose fault it really was, the houses were filled with guards belonging to the ghost and the streets were filled with the invaders; it was hard to go out and it was just as hard to stay at home in peace for fear of being asked to pay taxes.
But how would they pay their taxes?
All year round the birds had come from the north, the south, the east and the west to eat the grain in the fields, but no one had paid the slightest heed. These creatures never rob the people who are alert, for fear of being punished. The wise men looked at their books and said, ‘The unheeding are blessed, while the alert are unclean, therefore we must keep away from them at all times.’
Everyone was filled with happiness upon hearing this.
5
But despite everything one cannot stop the question, ‘How will we pay our taxes?’
The answer blows in the wind, from graveyard and killing fields it comes, ‘With pride, with respect, with blood!’
The problem with questions is that they never come alone. One follows another, ‘Will these ghouls rule over us forever?’
When this reaches Mother Goose and all her children, they quickly cover their ears and say, ‘What ever next! We have never heard such questions, such curiosity. What then of that ancient sleep – the one that was there before anyone had needed to wake up?’
Says the one with the questions, ‘I understand, but then do we do with these, these most enlightened of birds and the most recently arrived robbers, what of them?’
Mother Goose says, ‘I will read them a few of my stories, it should do for both bird and bandit.’
The young and the impatient stir up and say impatiently, ‘We will get rid of them in any way we choose.’
The chief minister stares angrily and said, ‘Shut up! The wheels of my government still turn, you know!’
This makes the innocents fall silent and soon go back to sleep.
6
The main thing is that the old master remains, neither living nor dead, but like a ghost. He has nothing to say about the land but he does not leave it either.
There were a few people there who could not speak during the day for fear of the guards; they came to him in the darkness of night and said with the utmost respect, ‘Master, should you not be going now?’
He said, ‘You fools, I can neither leave, nor stay, I can escape only if you people let me.’
They said, ‘But we are afraid!’
The master said, ‘And that fear is the very place where the ghosts will live.’
