In the meantime another letter arrived.
This said -‘You did not answer my letter. You have done the right thing for there are some things that cannot be expressed in writing; I know what your answer is already. When the devotee calls upon God, does God have to speak his answer? I know that my supplication has found its place at your feet!’
‘But if Shiva’s meditation should be disturbed by the devotion of a supplicant do not be angry with me, ruler of my heart! Give me something, whether you want to open your eyes to me or not, whether you wish to know my heart or not, I cannot live without offering myself to you. That is why I am writing to you again – though you may remain unmoved, my stony hearted lover.’
Mahendra started to write an answer once again. But as he wrote to Asha, answers that were really meant for Binodini seemed to pour out of his pen. He did not know how to write secret coded messages. After tearing up many sheets of paper over many hours he finally completed a letter. Just as he wrote Asha’s name on the envelope, he felt a sudden twinge of conscience like a whip across his back; an inner voice that seemed to say, ‘How could you betray that faithful one like this!’ He tore the letter up into many pieces and spent the rest of the night with his face shielded in his arms on his desk as if he was trying to hide from his very own eyes.
The third letter arrived; ‘Does the one who does not know how to remonstrate know how to love? If I cannot save my love from neglect, how will I offer it to you?’
‘Perhaps I did not understand your motives when you left and this gave me the courage to write such letters to you. Perhaps that is why even after you abandoned me I still picked up the pen to write the first letter; when you chose silence in response, I still told you of what was in my heart. But if I have misunderstood you, is it my fault alone? If you think of all that has passed, did you not give me the licence to think thus of you?’
‘Nevertheless I regret that whatever I have done, whether right or wrong, and all that I have already written is not to be erased. Nor can I take back what I have already given. For shame that this should happen to a woman! But do not feel that I am going to offer my love again and again so that it may be spurned. If you do not want me to write to you or even reply to me, this is where it ends..’
Mahendra could not stay away any more. He convinced himself that he was returning under duress and in a state of great anger. If Binodini had the audacity to think that he had left home to avoid her, Mahendra would immediately go back to prove her wrong!
Bihari arrived. Mahendra felt even more elated when he saw him. Lately he had been jealous of Bihari for various reasons and their friendship had grown strained. After reading the letter today, he cast aside all his former suspicions and envy and welcomed Bihari with some excessive feeling. He left his seat, thumped Bihari on the back, shook his hand and made him sit down on a chair.
But Bihari was in a sombre mood. Mahendra thought he might have been rejected by Binodini and asked, ‘Bihari, have you been to our house lately?’
Bihari answered quietly, ‘I have just been there.’
Mahendra felt a sense of amusement at the possible reason behind Bihari’s unhappiness. He said to himself, ‘Poor Bihari! He is deprived of a woman’s love.’ He patted his own pocket to hear the comforting rustle of the three letters within.
Mahendra asked, ‘How did you find everyone there?’
Bihari did not answer his question and said instead, ‘Why are you living here instead of at home?’
Mahendra answered, ‘I frequently have to work at night – it is not convenient to do that from home.’
Bihari retorted, ‘You have had night shifts before, but I have never seen you live in lodgings previously.’
Mahendra smiled and said, ‘Why, are you suspecting me of something else?’
Bihari answered, ‘No, I am not joking, you need to go home right away.’
Mahendra had been prepared to do so; but when he heard the plea in Bihari’s voice he convinced himself otherwise and felt that he did not want to go home at all. He said, ‘How is that possible, Bihari! I will lose a whole year then!’
Bihari said, ‘Look Mahendra, I have known since you were a little child, do not try to pull the wool over my eyes. You are doing something wrong.’
Mahendra: Whom am I wronging, dear Judge?
Bihari said with some annoyance, ‘You have always boasted about your kind heart, where did that kindhearted spirit go?’
Mahendra: Most recently, to the hospital.
Bihari: Stop, Mahendra! You sit here cracking jokes with me while at home Asha wanders through the house crying and unhappy.
Mahendra felt a sudden jolt when he heard of Asha’s tears. Full of his new obsession with Binodini, he had been unaware of the existence of anyone else’s feelings in the world. He was startled into asking. ‘Why is she crying?’
Bihari said with some annoyance, ‘If you do not know that, why am I supposed to?
Mahendra: If you have to be angry with me for not knowing everything, do direct your anger towards my creator.’
Then Bihari told him about all that he had seen. His voice almost broke as he recalled Asha’s tear streaked face as he had seen her, in Binodini’s embrace.
Mahendra was amazed at this strong emotional reaction on Bihari’s part. He had known Bihari to be insensitive all along – and wondered when this change had occurred. Was it the day they had gone to see Asha for the first time? Poor Bihari, wretched Bihari. Mahendra might have thought of him as wretched but in truth he felt more happiness than pity. He knew where Asha’s affections were entirely directed. Mahendra felt a sense of pride in knowing that although she was desired by another, she was forever his, and would never to be anyone else’s.
He said to Bihari, ‘Fine, then let us get a carriage and go’.
