‘এই সেদিন তুমি এসেছ, দুদিন পরে যাবে চলে;
The Ordinary Woman
I am a woman who lives away from the world,
You will not have met me.
I have read your recent novel, Saratbabu,
‘Garland Of Stale Flowers’.
Your heroine Elokeshi almost died
At the age of thirty five.
She was competing with the age of twenty five.
I found that you are generous indeed –
You allowed her to win.
Let me tell you something about myself,
I am young.
Someone came into my life,
At this tender age.
That brought such a thrill to my body –
I even forgot I am after all, very ordinary.
There are thousands of women like me,
Who have been touched by the magic of youth.
Let me plead with you,
Please write about an ordinary woman.
She has much to feel sorry about.
Even within that plainness,
If anything extraordinary is hiding
How is she to prove it?
How many can be found that are able to see that?
They only see the illusion of youth,
Their minds do not seek the truth
We women are mirages.
Let me tell you why I brought this up:
Let us say, his name is Naresh.
He said that he had never met anyone like me
I was not brave enough to believe such a statement
Nor strong enough to see it as a lie.
One day he went abroad.
Sometimes I got a letter or two.
I used to think, “Good God, there are so many women even there,
There must be crowds of them.
And are they all extraordinary?
Such brains, such brilliance!
And have they all discovered the one Naresh Sen?
Who was hidden amongst many, when he was here”.
In his latest letter he writes,
“Went sea bathing with Lizzie”
He even quotes from a Bengali poem,
That part about the heavenly dancer Urvashi rising from the sea!
Then they sat side by side on the sands,
The waves of the blue sea before them,
The sky above filled with spotless sunshine.
Lizzie said to him very softly,
“You have just arrived, you will leave in a short while
Two halves of a shell –
Let there be a perfect, priceless teardrop in between them”
What a lovely way of saying things!
Naresh too has written,
“Even if they are made up words
Are they not beautiful?
A diamond encrusted golden flower is not real but still real enough”.
You can understand,
How this makes me feel,
A thorn of comparison from his letter straight to my heart.
I am exceedingly ordinary.
I do not have any thing of any worth
To pay in full for something so valuable.
To you, I say, let that be
Let me be indebted for eternity.
I implore you, please write a story Saratbabu,
About a very ordinary woman
One who must compete from afar
With not one but maybe seven such extraordinary women
Like seven suns of womanhood.
I know, I am unfortunate,
I have already lost.
But when you write about the ordinary woman,
Let her win, on my behalf,
Let my heart swell with pride on her behalf.
May your pen be blessed.
Give her the name Malati
That by the way is my name.
Never fear,
There are many such Malatis in this land
All ordinary women.
They do not know French or German,
They know how to cry.
How will you make her win?
You are magnanimous, mighty is your pen.
Perhaps you will take her down the path of sacrifice.
To the depths of sorrow, like Sakuntala!
Please, be kind to me.
Come down to my level.
As I lie in bed and in the dark of night
Ask for the impossible from my god –
I know that I will never get that.
But may your heroine receive all of that.
Let Naresh be in London for seven years,
Let him fail his examinations again and again,
In the midst of his circle of admiring females.
In the mean time, Malati completes her M.A.
From Calcutta University.
Let her come first in Mathematics with one stroke of your pen,
But if you stop there,
Your fame as a literary genius would be sullied.
Whatever my condition is,
Do not rein in your imagination.
You are not a miser like my fate.
Send the woman to Europe.
There, their knowledgeable, their wise, their brave,
Their poets, their artists, their kings –
Let them surround her in great numbers.
Let them discover her like astronomers do –
Not just as a scholar, but as a woman too.
Let her world conquering magic win them over,
Let that mystery unfold, not in this ignorant nation –
But in the land where there are connoisseurs, sympathizers
There are Englishmen, Germans and French.
Let them felicitate her at gatherings,
Where famous names will gather.
Let us imagine that praise is being showered on her,
She walks amongst that, unimpressed –
A galleon in full sail upon the waves.
Everyone whispers about the beauty of her eyes
They say the clouds of India’s monsoon and the brightness of her summer sun
Unite in her bewitching eyes.
(Let me say here
My eyes truly are blessed by the gods.
I had to say this for myself,
I have not yet met any European aficionado.)
Let Naresh come and stand there,
Alongside his band of extraordinary women.
And what happens after that?
Like the children’s rhyme,
My plants withered,
My dreams came to an end.
Alas! Ordinary woman –
Alas! Such a waste of the Creator’s energy!
