It took one look at Mahendra when he returned home for all the doubts in Asha’s mind to disappear like a morning mist. She could barely bring herself to look at Mahendra when she thought of the letters she had written. Mahendra scolded her and said, ‘How could you write all those things about me!’
He then took the three letters that he had read so often from his pocket. Asha anxiously pleaded, ‘Please, I beg you, you must destroy those!’ She tried to take them from him but he stopped her and said only after putting them back, ‘I went because it was my duty but you did not try to understand me. Did you have any suspicions about me?’
Tearfully Asha said, ‘Please forgive me this time, I will never do this again.’
Mahendra asked, ‘Never again?’
Asha promised, ‘Never!’
Mahendra then drew her close and kissed her. Asha asked, ‘Give me the letters, I will destroy them.’
Mahendra said, ‘No, let them be.’
Asha thought to herself, ‘He is going to hold onto those as a warning to me.’
Asha grew annoyed with Binodini over this matter of the letters. She did not go to her friend as was her habit with the good news of her husband’s homecoming and avoided her instead. Binodini noticed this and stayed away on the pretext of work.
Mahendra thought to himself, ‘This is strange! I had thought she would find excuses to come to see me more often, but it seems the opposite is happening. What did she mean by those letters then?’
Mahendra had steeled himself against any attempts to understand the secret ways of women, he had even decided to stay away from Bindodini in the event of her approaching him. But now he told himself, ‘This is not right. Something seems to be broken between the two of us. I must try and make this air of forced unfamiliarity disappear by talking to her normally.’
He said to Asha, ‘It seems I am now the grit in your friend’s eyes. She never comes here any more.’
Asha answered casually, ‘Who cares? There is always something going on.’
One day Rajlakshmi came to Mahendra in tears and said, ‘Bipin’s wife says she will not stay any longer.’
Mahendra recovered from his surprise and asked, ‘But why Mother?’
Rajlakshmi answered, ‘I do not know, but this time she really is insisting on going home. You deliberately do not give people the respect due to them. How can she stay with everyone behaving so coldly with her?’
Mahendra went to Binodini’s room where she was sewing a hem on a bedsheet and spoke to her, ‘Bali?’
Binodini sat up straighter and said, ‘What is it sir?’
Mahendra declared, ‘Whatever next! Since when have you been addressing me like that?’
Binodini fixed her downcast eyes on her sewing once again and said, ‘Then how should I address you?’
Mahendra: ‘The same way you address your friend, Chokher Bali.’
Binodini did not answer with her customary humour and kept stitching.
Mahendra: ‘Perhaps that is our true relationship, the grit in the eye, and thus we cannot use them as names any more.’
Binodini paused, cut the thread with her teeth and said, ‘How do I know, it is all up to you.’
Before he could come up with an answer, she quickly said, ‘Why did you suddenly come back home now?’
Mahendra answered, ‘How long can one be satisfied with the company of dead people?’
Binodini cut the thread once again with her teeth and murmured without raising her face, ‘So now you must hack into the hearts of the living!’
Mahendra had decided that he would engage Binodini in jest and conversation as usual. But she was in such a serious mood that he could not think of anything light and frivolous in answer. Seeing that she was bent on preserving a cold and hardened distance between the two of them, all he could think of was to do something to shake her implacable calm. His mind rushed headlong towards her. Instead of answering her previous words, he suddenly moved closer to her and asked, ‘Why are you leaving us? Have I done something wrong?’
Binodini moved slightly and raised her huge burning eyes to Mahendra, looking at him steadily as she said, ‘Everyone has responsibilities. When you went to the lodging house leaving us all, was that because we had done something wrong? Can I not go as well? Do I not have responsibilities?’
Mahendra could not think of a suitable answer. He asked after some time, ‘What responsibility have you got that you must leave?’
Binodini threaded her needle very carefully and said, ‘Only I know what responsibilities I have. Why should I have to list them for you?’
Mahendra sat quietly for a long time looking at a distant coconut palm through the window. He looked worried. Binodini continued with her sewing in silence. If she had dropped the needle at that moment it would have broken the silence. Mahendra spoke up after a long time. Binodini was startled by the sudden noise and pricked herself with her needle.
Mahendra said, ‘Will nothing convince you to stay?’
Binodini sucked the blood from her finger and said, ‘Why are you pleading like this? What difference will it make whether I stay or I go? What do you care?’
Her voice seemed to break slightly as she said this; she bent her head very close to her needlework and paid great attention to it – there was a glint of tears at the ends of the sweep of her eyelashes. The winter evening was giving way to the darkness of night outside the window.
Mahendra suddenly grabbed her hand and said in a choked voice, ‘If it did make a difference to me, would you stay?’
Binodini pulled her hand away quickly and moved even further from Mahendra. He was suddenly deeply aware of what he had done. His words seemed to mock him repeatedly like some horrible mistake. He bit his tongue and silenced it into shame.
At this time, Asha entered the silent room. Binodini immediately said to Mahendra, as though this had been what they had discussed only minutes before, ‘When you are all raising me to such heights, it is also my duty to give in to your request. I promise to not leave unless I am sent away.’
Asha was overjoyed at her husband’s success and embraced her friend. She said, ‘That is a promise that you must make to me three times, unless sent away, you will stay, you will stay, you will stay!’
