পশ্চিম মাঠ-পারে;

THE OATH THAT HE SWORE
“The Maratha hordes are about to descend,
We must prepare for war”
In Ajmer fort surrounded by sand
Lord Dumraj declares with a roar.
In the midday hour in every house
People were preparing the lunchtime repast
When drums rang loud from the ramparts to rouse
Summoning all to come running in haste.
They scaled the walls and shaded their eyes
Far off on the southern roads
Plumes of dust to the sky did rise
From the hooves of the Marattha horde.
“Let all the Marattha locusts speedily burn
In the flames of our raised blade
So that they may never return ”
The enraged Lord Dumraj said.
A messenger arrived from Marwar
Saying, “This army is ordered not to budge,
I hold here a missive from your master
He has words for you, Lord Dumraj.
The Scindia comes, you must abide
His foreign devil of a general by his side –
Yield the fort to them with grace
This order of his you must follow.
The muse of victory Vijay Lakshmi has turned away
From Vijay Singh the brave
No war can you wage in order to save
Beloved Ajmer from the Marattha maw.
“My creed of honour is at odds today
With the order my master has decreed “
With a sigh and a heavy heart did say
Lord of the fort Dumraj.
The messenger from Marwar announced,
“Cast aside this chainmail suit.”
But like a statue from stone carved
Immoveable stood my Lord Dumraj.
The day is nearly done, fields shimmer in setting sun,
Cattle graze near and far –
Under the shade of trees a wistful tune
As a shepherd plays his flute.
“When you gave Ajmer fort into my care
I had vowed to myself,
That to breach these walls no enemy would dare
As long as there was life within me.
Will my master’s order be enough
For me to forget my pride!”
Deep was the sigh that escaped the lips
Of my disappointed Lord Dumraj.
The Rajput army were full of anger and shame
As they stripped off their breastplates and arms
But silent there stood upon the gate
My defiant Lord Dumraj.
Saffron robed, evening descends
Upon the western fields;
The Marattha army swathed in clouds of dust
Comes to a halt at the fortress doors.
“Who lies there asleep by the wall,
Wake up, wake and let us enter the fort.”
But there was no one left to heed the call
Within his heart life no longer held court.
When a master’s words are at odds with one’s honourable heart
You must fight to preserve what you know to be true
At the gates of the fort lies dead the upstart
My honourable lord Dumraj.
