He might have thought I was gathering my blessings in secret. But no, not at all, those were not my blessings, it was my woman’s heart; the love that lives there, it wants to give itself up in worship.
My in-laws followed the old ways. Some of their rules came from the Mughals and the Pathans, some from the laws laid down by Manu. But my husband was completely modern. He was the first in the family to get a proper education and earn a Masters degree. His two older brothers drank themselves to death at an early age; they had no children. My husband does not drink alcohol, there is no restlessness in his nature. This is so against the nature of the family that not everyone likes him, they are of the opinion that being so faultless is a sign of poverty. They do not put up with such imagined failings in the way the moon seems to embrace the marks upon her face.
My parents-in-law had passed away a long time ago. My grandmother-in-law was the matriarch of the home. My husband was her favourite. This was why he had managed to overcome some of the restrictions that were in place. This is why when he appointed Miss Gilbey as my companion and teacher, every tongue in the house dripped poison, but my husband was able to maintain his stand.
That was when he was studying his Masters course. He had to stay in Kolkata as that was where the college was. He wrote to me almost every day, a few words, in a simple fashion, the rounded even letters seeming to smile up at me from the page.
I used to put these letters away in a sandalwood box and cover them with fresh flowers from the garden each day. The fairy tale prince had now vanished like the moon surrendering to the sun during the daytime. My real prince was now seated on the throne of my heart. I was his queen, I was able to sit next to him, but I had more pleasure in knowing my appropriate place was at his feet.
I had been educated, thus my acquaintance with the present was on my own terms in a language I knew. These words sound rather poetic to me. If I did not have to deal with the present, I would have called that feeling prosaic – just as the fact that I am a woman by virtue of birth is not something I have made up, the tendency of women to distill respect from love is also natural; there is no need to try and find a sense of the poetic in this natural progression of things.
But somewhere, in between my childhood and my youth, I arrived at a different place altogether. Something that had been as natural as breathing suddenly became something as complex as poetry. Today sentimental men talk increasingly loudly about the wonderful poetry in a married woman’s devotion to her duties and a widow’s celibacy. This will make it clear how there is a distinct schism between truth and beauty at this point. Can truth be brought back for the sake of beauty alone?
I do not believe that all feminine minds are made in the same mould. But I do know that one thing that my mind had inherited from my mother was her eagerness to please through respect. Today, when that has become harder to do outwardly, I begin to understand it as a part of my mentality.
My luck was such that my husband did not give me a chance to shower him with that devotion. That was his greatness. The priests at a temple who squabble over the offerings, do so because they are not worth the worship themselves. Only the coward wants his wife to be devoted to him; that is demeaning to both the servile as well as to he who receives it.
But why was so much given to me? He gave me servants and material things, he gave me everything possible till I could have no more. How could I give these up and give myself to him? I needed to have a chance to give a lot more than the chance to receive. Love is by nature, needy. It blooms in the dust of neglect, rather than in a flower pot in a living room
My husband had been unable to give up completely all the old fashioned rules of the inner quarters. We could never meet whenever we pleased, whether during the day or at night. I always knew exactly when he would come; therefore we could were never spontaneous. Our unions were like rhyme in poetry; through rhythm and in punctuated breaks. At the end of the day, after the housework was done, I would have a bath, do my hair with care, put on a red vermilion dot on my forehead, wear a folded saree, bring my body and mind back from the wanderings of the day and offer myself up to one person at a specific time, on a golden platter. That time was short but it meant the world.
My husband has always said, men and women hold equal rights to each other, therefore they must love equally. I never argued with him over this. But my mind says that, respect does not prevent people from being equal. It seeks to lift people to the same heights and make them equal. That is why the joy of being equal can be experienced continually. it never becomes tedious. The offering of respect and love is like the holy flame, both worshipped and worshipper are equally illuminated. I know with certainty today that a woman’s love is sanctified when it is offered, other wise it flickers wanly. When the flame of love burns, it rises higher, the oil spills from the lamp only when there is no flame.
Dearest, that you did not want me to worship you is typical of your nature, but it would have been better had you allowed it. You have loved me by dressing me up, by teaching me, by giving whatever I wanted and what I did not ask for, I have seen you forgetting to blink at the intensity of my love, I have seen you sigh at the intensity of my love. You have loved my body as though it was a heavenly flower, you have loved my nature as though that was your good fortune. This has given me pride, it has made me feel as though, you had come to ask for a share of my wealth. That is when I felt like sitting on the queen’s throne and demanding respect. This demand keeps increasing, it is never satisfied. Is it a woman’s happiness or her well being that depends on the knowledge that she can control men? This pride needs to be offered up along with respect to render it harmless. Shiva came to Annapurna as a mendicant begging for alms, but would Annapurna have been able to bear Shiva’s ferocious aura if she had not prayed for him?
Today I remember how many people were overcome by the flickering flames of jealousy at my good fortune at the time. Jealousy was natural. I had received without asking, hence it had to follow that I had received through deception. but deception cannot go on forever; a price must be paid. Other wise our Maker finds it intolerable – one has to pay one’s debt to good fortune each day for a long time, .only then does it become a constant truth. Our Maker can always give us, but the taking depends on ourselves. Sometimes even something we have received may remain out of reach, simply because of our misfortune.
