The monkey then said – King, my mother suffers greatly in her broken room
The door is cracked, there is no straw on the roof and the winter cold comes into the room. My mother has no quilt to keep herself warm nor wood to light a fire and so she shivers all night long.
The king said – That is true. You should have told me! Monkey, bring your mother to the palace, I will give orders for her rooms to be decorated.
The monkey answered – But King, I worry that the younger queen will poison my mother if I bring her here.
The king reassured him, saying – Have no fear. I will keep the queen in the new quarters, with a moat to surround her and guards at the gates, the younger queen will not be able to come near her. That will be for the queen alone and for her deaf mute of a maid and for her pet son, the monkey.
The king said – Minister, go and decorate the new palace.
The minister set thousands of people to work and the new castle was built in a day.
The neglected queen moved from her broken rooms with its ragged quilt and came to the new palace wearing a sari of the finest gold. she sat on a bed of gold, ate from a golden plate, gave alms to the poor and won the hearts of the kingdom. The younger queen seethed in anger.
The old woman said – Be quiet, for someone might hear you! I will bring you the poison, give it to her. Bid me farewell that I may go and get the poison.
The queen said – Go but make sure that the poison is strong and that the queen falls ill as soon as she takes it.
The old woman said – Never fear! I will give her the poison and make sure her plans to become a mother are thwarted! Never fear!
She went to look for the poison. She wandered in the forests and when it was dark and evening had fallen, she cast a spell on a sleeping snake and stole the poison from its fangs.
The younger queen made sweets with that poison. She laid them out on a platter and called the witch saying – Take these to the queen and sell them to her.
The old woman came with the platter to the new palace.
The queen said – Come, come! Where have you been? Have you forgotten me because I am not favoured?
The witch said – How can that be? I live because of your largesse, how can I forget you? See I have brought some home made sweets for you!
The queen saw that the old woman had brought a few sweets that she had arranged with great care on a platter. She gave her handfuls of gold coins and the woman went away laughing.
The queen then broke a piece off and put it in her mouth but her tongue grew numb. She ate another piece and her throat grew parched. She ate from another and her chest burned as if on fire. She called the monkey and said – What did the old woman give me? I feel so ill, perhaps I am going to die.
The monkey said – Come mother, lie down on the bed, you will feel better.
The queen stood up and the poison rose to her brain. She could not see any longer and as she grew dizzy, she fell down in a dead faint on the stone floor.
The monkey took her head into his lap, checked her pulse, pulled her eyelid to look at the eye and found that she had passed out.
He then placed his beautiful mother on her golden bed and ran to the forest for her cure. He brought stems and roots that he crushed to make a potion that he gave to the queen.
News went to the palace that the queen had taken poison. The king came rushing to her chambers. The minister came. The royal physician came mumbling his spells. Then all the servants and maids and workers cane. The monkey asked the king – Why did you bring all these people? I have given my mother medicines and she is better. All she needs is sleep. Ask all the people to leave.
The king had the physician test the poisoned sweets and then leave. The minister was given charge of the kingdom and the king stayed by the queen’s bedside.
The queen lay in a dead faint for three days and three nights. On the fourth day she came to and opened her eyes. The monkey came and said to the king – The queen is better and now you have a son who will be a king of kings.
The monkey said – King, I have seen it in the stars that you will be blinded if you see your son now. Let him get married first, then see him. Now go and see what the younger queen has done to my mother. The king went and saw how the queen’s skin had turned dark with the poison, she lay like a leaf upon her bed and was barely recognisable. The king returned to his palace and had the younger queen imprisoned and had her confidante shaved, placed on an ass backwards and exiled from the kingdom.
He then ordered his minister – It is a very good day today, we have a prince at long last. Organise lights on every street, fireworks in every household and feed every poor beggar in the kingdom. The minister went and did as the king said and his subjects were thankful for the king’s benevolence.
The monkey said – King, first arrange a bride for your son, let the marriage take place and then look upon his face. If you see him now, you will go blind. The king sent messengers to all corners of the world on hearing this. So many kings sent word of their daughters, but the king said no to all of them. At the end, the brother of the king of Patali brought a likeness of their princess concealed in a golden frame. She had skin the colour of molten gold, her eye brows curved like a bow, her eyes were like a deer’s, her mouth was wreathed in smiles and her hair fell to her feet in great waves. The king saw her and sent for the monkey saying – I have found my son a bride. Tomorrow is a good day for a marriage. The monkey answered – King, send a palanquin and men to the queen’s quarter’s tomorrow in the evening, we will go to have him married.
The king said – Look now, I have listened to everything you said for ten years. I will lose my temper if I cannot see my son now that the ten years at an end.
The monkey said – Do not worry about that Great King! You go to the venue today, we will go with the groom tomorrow. The king was so worried that he would go blind if he saw his son that he quickly set out for the kingdom of his new in-laws. The monkey then went to the queen in her new palace where she had been weeping ever since she heard that her son was to be married.
