১

The clouds descend as drops of rain, to surrender to the earth. Just as women come to earth to be caught.
They do not need much more than a little space and a few people to feel happy about the world. And they fill that tiny space with their words, their pains and their thoughts. That is why their heads are veiled, bangles tinkle about their arms and their courtyards are fenced. They are the queens within their little heavens.
Some heavenly being surely came to play on earth through that girl, with her unceasing activity. Her mother calls her a bandit when she is angry, her father smiles and calls her his mad one.
She flows merrily like a waterfall and trips over all obstacles and restrictions. Her mind is like the leafy tips atop a bamboo grove, always rippling with thoughts.

Today I saw that lively child standing all quiet, leaning on the railings of the verandah, as subdued as a rainbow at the end of the rainy season. Her large dark eyes were still today, like a rain drenched bird in pensive rest upon the branches of the Tamal.
I had never seen her being silent like this. It was as though a river had been made to pause suddenly and a lake had formed.

A few days ago, the sun had beaten down with great intensity. The horizon sulked, the leaves on the trees were dry and yellow with despair.
Suddenly a dark ill-mannered cloud filled the sky, covering it in all directions like a tent. A blood red beam of sunshine emerged like a blade from a scabbard.
At midnight I woke to find all the doors shaking and rattling. The storm and the winds had taken the sleeping city by the hair and shaken it awake.
I rose and found the streetlight staring back at me through the driving rain like a bleary eye drunk. The church bell rang, its sound muffled by the rain as though smothered in a blanket.
In the morning the rain grew heavier and the sun did not come up.

And amid the rain that girl stood, quiet by the railings of the verandah.
Her sister came and called her saying, ‘Mother wants you.’ She only shook her head vigorously, her plaits moving. Her brother came with a paper boat and pulled her by the hand. But she pulled back. He still kept asking her. She slapped him back.

It is raining. The darkness grows. The girl stands, quiet.
In the ancient times, the first sounds heard on the lips of creation emerged from the language spoken by water and the voices that are carried on the wind. Those half forgotten words traversed the millennia and stirred the heart of the girl. That was why she had escaped to where no fences could hold her back.
Vast is the ocean of time and vast this world and innumerable the things that have happened to this earth through all that time. That vast distance had spoken to the girl today through cloud shadow and rain murmur.
And so she stood and listened, her large eyes silent, like a deity that has ruled since eternity.
