হিতসাধনমণ্ডলীর সভায় কথিত

সৃষ্টির প্রথম অবস্থায় বাষ্পের প্রভাব যখন বেশি তখন গ্রহনক্ষত্রে ল্যাজামুড়োর প্রভেদ থাকে না। আমাদের দেশে সেই দশা– তাই সকলকেই সব কাজে লাগতে হয়, কবিকেও কাজের কথায় টানে। অতএব আমি আজকের এই সভায় দাঁড়ানোর জন্যে যদি ছন্দোভঙ্গ হয়ে থাকে তবে ক্ষমা করতে হবে।

এখানকার আলোচ্য কথাটি সোজা। দেশের হিত করাটা যে দেশের লোকেরই কর্তব্য সেইটে এখানে স্বীকার করতে হবে। এ কথাটা দুর্বোধ নয়। কিন্তু নিতান্ত সোজা কথাও কপালদোষে কঠিন হয়ে ওঠে সেটা পূর্বে পূর্বে দেখেছি। খেতে বললে মানুষ যখন মারতে আসে তখন বুঝতে হবে সহজটা শক্ত হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। সেইটেই সব চেয়ে মুশকিলের কথা।

আমার মনে পড়ে এক সময়ে যখন আমার বয়স অল্প ছিল, সুতরাং সাহস বেশি ছিল, সে সময়ে বলেছিলুম যে বাঙালির ছেলের পক্ষে বাংলা ভাষার ভিতর দিয়ে শিক্ষা পাওয়ার দরকার আছে। শুনে সেদিন বাঙালির ছেলের বাপদাদার মধ্যে অনেকেই ক্রুদ্ধ হয়েছিলেন।

আর-একদিন বলেছিলুম, দেশের কাজ করবার জন্য দেশের লোকের যে অধিকার আছে সেটা আমরা আত্ম-অবিশ্বাসের মোহে বা সুবিধার খাতিরে অন্যের হাতে তুলে দিলে যথার্থপক্ষে নিজের দেশকে হারানো হয়। সামর্থ্যের স্বল্পতা-বশত যদি-বা আমাদের কাজ অসম্পূর্ণও হয়, তবু সে ক্ষতির চেয়ে নিজশক্তি-চালনার গৌরব ও সার্থকতার লাভ অনেক পরিমাণে বেশি। এত বড়ো একটা সাদা কথা লোক ডেকে যে বলতে বসেছিলুম তাতে মনের মধ্যে কিছু লজ্জা বোধ করেছিলুম। কিন্তু বলা হয়ে গেলে পরে লাঠি হাতে দেশের লোকে আমার সেটুকু লজ্জা চুরমার করে দিয়েছিল।

দেশের লোককে দোষ দিই নে। সত্য কথাও খামকা শুনলে রাগ হতে পারে। অন্যমনস্ক মানুষ যখন গর্তর মধ্যে পড়তে যাচ্ছে তখন হঠাৎ তাকে টেনে ধরলে সে হঠাৎ মারতে আসে। যেই, সময় পেলেই, দেখতে পায় সামনে গর্ত আছে, তখন রাগ কেটে যায়। আজ সময় এসেছে, গর্ত চোখে পড়েছে, আজ আর সাবধান করবার দরকারই নেই।

দেশের লোককে দেশের কাজে লাগতে হবে এ কথাটা আজ স্বাভাবিক হয়েছে। তার প্রধান কারণ, দেশ যে দেশ এই উপলব্ধিটা আমাদের মনে আগেকার চেয়ে স্পষ্ট হয়ে উঠেছে। সুতরাং দেশকে সত্য বলে জানবামাত্রই তার সেবা করবার উদ্যমও আপনি সত্য হল, সেটা এখন আর নীতি-উপদেশ মাত্র নয়।

যৌবনের আরম্ভে যখন বিশ্ব সম্বন্ধে আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতা অল্প অথচ আমাদের শক্তি উদ্যত, তখন আমরা নানা বৃথা অনুকরণ করি, নানা বাড়াবাড়িতে প্রবৃত্ত হই। তখন আমরা পথও চিনি নে, ক্ষেত্রও চিনি নে, অথচ ছুটে চলবার তেজ সামলাতে পারি নে। সেই সময়ে আমাদের যাঁরা চালক তাঁরা যদি আমাদের ঠিকমত কাজের পথে লাগিয়ে দেন তা হলে অনেক বিপদ বাঁচে। কিন্তু তাঁরা এ পর্যন্ত এমন কথা বলেন নি যে, “এই আমাদের কাজ, এসো আমরা কোমর বেঁধে লেগে যাই।’ তাঁরা বলেন নি “কাজ করো’, তাঁরা বলেছেন “প্রার্থনা করো’।

When the universe was being formed there was an excess of gas and this means there was little to distinguish between planets and stars. The situation in our country is the same – which is why everyone has a hand in every kind of activity and even a poet must be called upon to speak about sensible things. So forgive me if my presence in this gathering strikes a dischordant note.

The topic being discussed is easy. One must accept that it is the responsibility of the people of the country to try and help it. This is not difficult to understand. But I have seen often in the past that even the simplest words can become unintelligible through sheer bad luck. When people come rushing at you in anger because you invited them to a meal, one must know that the easy has become difficult. That is the most difficult thing of all.

I remember once when I was young, and hence more courageous, I had said that Bengali youth needed to receive their education in the Bengali language. Many of the fathers and brothers of the Bengali youth had been angered that day.

At another time I had said, if we give away the right we have of doing the nation’s work to others on the basis of blind self confidence or for personal ease it is equal to losing the country. Even if the work is left incomplete by us due to lack of ability, that loss is still less than the pride and fulfillment of using one’s own power to achieve. I was feeling slightly ashamed that I had invited people to tell them such an obvious fact. But once I did say it, the people of my country took to me with cudgels and managed to destroy any shame I might have felt.

I do not blame them. A sudden onslaught of truth can make people angry. When one tries to grab an absentminded person falling into a hole they can hit back as a reflex. Given time, when they see the hole in front, their anger disappears. Today the time is ripe, our eyes are on the hole, there is no more need for warnings.

Today it has become natural to assume that the people of a country must work for that country. The main reason for this is that the realization that the country is ours has become clearer than it was in the past. Hence the drive to help the country became an accepted truth as soon as the concept of country became true; it is no longer a dry piece of advice.

In the early days of youth when our experience of the world is limited but our strength is on the rise, we try to ape things in vain and cross boundaries where we can. At the time we know neither the way nor where it leads but we cannot resist the temptation to rush ahead. During this period, if our leaders guide us correctly we can be saved from many dangers. But they have not said yet, ‘This is our task. Come and let us do it all together.’ They have not said, ‘Work for salvation.’ They have said, ‘Pray, for salvation.’ This means rather than depending on yourself for results, depend on outsiders.
